Julie Kendle, senior director of clinical pharmacy at IPD Analytics, explains where managed healthcare organizations should look if they want to improve PrEP access and align with public health goals.
Increasing access to preexposure prophylaxis is a cornerstone of addressing the HIV epidemic.
For managed care organizations looking to improve access, the most important health policy is the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Grade A recommendation for the use of PrEP in at-risk populations, according to Julie Kendle, senior director of clinical pharmacy at IPD Analytics.
“Because of the Affordable Care Act and the USPSTF recommendation, the vast majority of health plans in the United States are required to cover PrEP with no member out-of-pocket costs, along with other related services like office visits and testing,” Kendle said in a recent interview with Managed Healthcare Executive.
In this conversation, Kendle also touches on Medicare National Coverage Determinations and new legislation that allows some pharmacists to prescribe PrEP.
Kendle presented today at the 2026 annual meeting of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) in Nashville, Tennessee. It is being held from April 13-16.
She spoke during a session called ‘Next-Generation HIV PrEP: Therapeutic Advances, Adherence Optimization and Policy Updates for Managed Care.’
