Julie Kendle, Pharm.D., Senior Director of Clinical Pharmacy at IPD Analytics, explains how managed care organizations can support patients at risk of HIV.

Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can reduce a person’s risk of getting HIV by approximately 99%.

A patient’s PrEP journey is often separated into three phases: initiation, access and adherence, according to Julie Kendle, Pharm.D., senior director of clinical pharmacy at IPD Analytics.

“Managed care strategies can really be helpful in every single one of those phases,” Kendle said in a recent video interview with Managed Healthcare Executive.

Kendle went on to list some ways that managed care organizations can help, which include identifying patients eligible for PrEP and partnering with community-based organizations to encourage uptake, which is especially important among minority populations.

She also touched on some medical benefit considerations, particularly for long-acting injectables.

“Is the injection location in the preferred network? What's the member's copay or coinsurance for these types of services?” she said. “Who facilitates the prior authorization process, if that applies? Is it the managed care organization, or is it a PBM?”

Kendle presented this week at the 2026 annual meeting of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) in Nashville, Tennessee. It is being held from April 13-16.

She spoke during a session called 'Next-Generation HIV PrEP: Therapeutic Advances, Adherence Optimization and Policy Updates for Managed Care.'
